Santa Fe Shopping

Santa Fe is a shopper’s paradise. Traditionally, most of Santa Fe’s shops are small and offer a variety of goods that aren’t available anywhere else. Art, silver and turquoise jewelry, fine leatherwork, unique clothing and accessories, distinctive household items, Native American pottery and crafts, and special items from around the world are represented in abundance.

The area around Santa Fe’s historic Plaza, is not only the center of the town, but the heart of Santa Fe’s shopping district. There are literally hundreds of shops both small and large located in this area of only a few square blocks. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs of your visit to Santa Fe, an extraordinary piece of jewelry, a special and unique outfit, or a pair of handmade cowboy boots, you’ll find it here. Santa Fe’s merchants take great pride in the quality of their products and deliver the personal attention that makes shopping in Santa Fe a great experience.

One special place that is frequented by visitors and locals alike is the portal of the Palace of the Governors, located on the Plaza. This area is reserved exclusively for American Indian artisans to market their wares. These artisans are licensed by the State of New Mexico, and adhere to a strict set of guidelines from their Indian pueblos. Due to the quality and authenticity of the products, this area is often crowded with shoppers looking for a special piece of the local culture.

Jackalope

Is it an open air market, a high-class furniture store, a local tradition or just plain fun? Yes. It's Jackalope. How best to describe this retail fun fest? If you set a group of leprechauns loose in the desert to design their own strip mall this is what they might give you.

You don't just drop by Jackalope; it's a destination. There's planning involved. Hat, water, sunscreen and carrots. (You'll see.)

James Reid, Ltd. is Santa Fe's best known maker of silver and gold belt buckles and accessories by virtue of integrity of design and quality of execution. Established in 1979, the house is famous both for original interpretations of Western Americana as well as for designs that transcend the parochial and aspire to the international; its objectives are born both of its regional origins as well as of its aspirations to the broader theater of contemporary design - to create "designs that travel".

Origins

Over on West San Francisco Street, Origins has been an indispensable part of the Santa Fe scene for 32 years now. They understand what their customers want, because what they have is out of the ordinary, and it’s difficult to live here and be just plain ordinary. Under the influence of New Mexico’s rich and colorful heritage there’s just too much that’s beautiful to buy, that you won’t see anywhere else. And like Santa Fe’s other wandering citizens, Origins owner Judy Margolis can swap travel stories with the best of ‘em. She’s been to India over twenty-four times, Afghanistan sixteen times, and everywhere else in between at least once.
