Santa Fe Featured Photographers

One of the things that’s most amazing about Santa Fe is the number of talented and gifted photographers that live and work here. Some are professionals, some are “amateurs”, but all have their own unique vision of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico. This is an area of amazing beauty, not just in the stunning scenery, but in the faces of the people who live here, the culture and heritage of the area, the flora and fauna, the festivals, events, architecture, and daily life of Santa Fe. We at SantaFe.com have chosen this area of our website to highlight and celebrate the work and vision of our local photographers. Hopefully, this area will help to educate, entertain, and inform our visitors, as well as serve as a reminder to those of us already fortunate enough to live here how special this place we call Home is.

If you’d like to share your images here, and feel that your vision would add to this area of our site, please email us at editor@santafe.com.

Andrew Neighbour

Andrew Neighbour is at the forefront of exploring a new world where digital photography meets classical realist painting and drawing. The photographs on this site—many of which have won awards—represent a union of his lifelong passion for photography with his training as a fine artist using oils, pastels, and a variety of drawing materials to paint landscapes and portraits.

He approaches fine art from a nontraditional route. Born in England in the early fifties, the son of an artist, Neighbour chose to distinguish himself through science. He immersed himself in the natural world learning to become a zoologist, medical research scientist, businessman, and university administrator. Through those years, his natural inquisitiveness and observation of the wonders of living things honed a visual skill that now emerges in his photographs, etchings, and paintings.

Having settled in Santa Fe to pursue his creative interests, Neighbour has built a growing commercial photography business specializing in art work, product, and architectural photography.

Cathy Scholl

My photographic journey began with eyes closed, in the meditation halls and mountain caves which drew me to India, where I have visited since 1995. The colorful festivals and fascinating people I met during extensive travel there re-ignited my childhood passion for photography. Additional photographic adventures led to Nepal, Bhutan, and Burma.

As a photographer I strive to include my inner experience along with what I am seeing, creating images which are both personal and universal.

My photographs have been exhibited in galleries throughout Southern California. In addition to winning many awards, I’ve been selected to hang in juried exhibitions curated by leading experts in the field of photography, such as Arthur Ollman, founding director of the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego.

After living in Santa Fe twice during the ’80’s I continued to visit the area while studying at Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. In 2006 I returned here to realize my dream of remodeling an old adobe and to take advantage of the combination of rich cultural activities, interesting people and beautiful light that are my perfect recipe for photography, whether found in distant lands or my own backyard.

Evalyn Bemis

Photographs can capture many things. In a photograph we might see “a decisive moment”. A startling bit of beauty can be revealed in something we previously took to be ordinary. We glimpse a truth about a stranger or someone very dear to us. We may be inspired to explore an unknown place or return many times to a special location.

I am interested in the things that happen in the edges of an image or just outside it or a moment before or one about to happen. I like to capture a gesture, the suggestion of something mysterious. As Yogi Berra said so concisely – “Sometimes you can see a lot just by looking”

My grandfather gave me a Zeiss camera when I was in high school. I discovered the joys of watching images appear in the magic of a darkroom. I especially loved black-and-white film and slides. I worked as a custom printer for a photo lab in Boston. I went to Hampshire College where I studied the history of photography and built my own darkroom. Photography became a tool in a career in graphic design and then took a further backseat to other pursuits. The advent of digital technology and the ease and fun of sharing images reawakened my interest in 2000.

Having owned and trained horses since the age of 7, I have a particular fondness for them. Horses turn up frequently in my photographs. My images and words have been published in the magazines Equestrian, Eventing USA, Horse Connection, Dressage Today, Chronicle of the Horse; in the Santa Fe New Mexican and Santa Fe Reporter newspapers; and in several online sites.

Greg Lewandowski

My wife and I have lived in New Mexico for more than a decade and I usually hike with my dog and trusty companion Luna. Three years ago when I first ventured into the wilderness area of northern New Mexico I knew I had discovered something that was exceptional and inspiring. I not only found a place that touched me deeply but silenced me with its beauty and majesty. As my love of the wilderness deepened, a strong passion for photography emerged.

After learning more about photography from many sources I gradually upgraded my camera and added specific lenses. I learned about wilderness survival and purchased the appropriate equipment for day hikes and multiple overnight backpacking excursions. I soon discovered that the wilderness demands rigorous preparation and awareness. In addition to topographic maps, compass, GPS, and an emergency rescue device, I also carry about 12 pounds of camera equipment.

My hope is that some of these photos may awaken something in you the way this incredible land has changed my life.
