Six-string wizard Steve Vai, along with his one-time teacher Joe Satriani, set the standard for rock guitar virtuosity in the '80s. Born on June 6, 1960, and raised in Carle Place, New York, Vai became interested in the guitar via such legendary artists as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper as a teenager and, upon starting high school, took lessons with an older player from the school, Joe Satriani. Playing in several local bands, Vai quickly picked up on the instrument, and by the age of 18 was attending the renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston. As a student there, Vai transcribed several of Frank Zappa's most technically demanding compositions for guitar, and even sent a copy of one such transcription, "Black Page," to Zappa himself. Zappa was so impressed with the young guitarist that upon meeting him, he invited Vai to join his band.
“The Story of Light…finds [Vai] continuing to push the envelope as a composer, arranger and, most of all, as a guitarist who continues to raise the bar for himself and others.” – Gibson.com
After an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to his over 90 shows performed last year on his “Story of Light 2013 Tour”, virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer Steve Vai has added an additional run of North American dates. Fan reviews of the shows have been phenomenal and can be read here: (http://reviews.ticketmaster.com/7171/736378/steve-vai-reviews/reviews.htm).
Vai will kick off this solo run October 16 in Santa Cruz, CA. The Story of Light 2013 Tour will take him throughout the country, with additional shows in San Diego, Las Vegas, Birmingham, Austin and Houston.
'The Story of Light' 2013 tour will feature a UNIQUE PREMIUM PACKAGE -- the Evo Experience – which includes a meet and greet pass, Q&A session with Vai, access to sound check, an exclusive EVO Experience laminate and other Vai merchandise items. EVO Experience premium tickets will be available for purchase through Vai's website, www.Vai.com. A limited number of EVO Experience tickets are available for each show.
The tour is in support of 'The Story Of Light', his critically acclaimed solo album of original material, which was released on Favored Nations Entertainment (the label Vai founded in 1999). 'The Story of Light' is Vai’s first studio record in seven years and described by AOL’s Noisecreep as “A brilliant record, fully-loaded with all of the soaring, tasteful playing that defines Vai’s work.” The album’s sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist’s acclaimed album Real Illusions: Reflections (2005.) The storyline follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption. Throughout, three-time GRAMMY ® Award winner Vai’s lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and listeners’ minds in equal measure.
As a Grammy award-winning guitar virtuoso with career sales of over 15 million records, Steve Vai’s sheer breathtaking facility on the guitar is acclaimed in the rock world and beyond.
While Vai clearly had what was needed to make indelible impressions during his stays with Frank Zappa and David Lee Roth (chosen to fill the shoes of Eddie Van Halen), it’s as a solo artist that he’s made his most valuable contributions. The Long Island, NY native has spent the last three decades writing, recording, composing for orchestra, and performing the most exciting music ever created with a guitar. His virtuosity and custom six and seven string instruments continue to inspire young musicians who celebrate Vai as the “Alien Guitar Master.”
Although Vai is hailed as a musical alchemist of the highest order and tours regularly in over 50 countries, he is also involved with many worthwhile organizations. He is a former Trustee for the National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences, is on the advisory board of Hollywood Arts, and works closely with his own Make a Noise Foundation, giving masterclasses and raising money for music education.
Steve attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the college. Last month, Berklee launched an eponymous course devoted to the study of Vai’s technique and style.
