Masterpieces of Antique American Indian Art

Located in the heart of historic Santa Fe, New Mexico, Morning Star Gallery is considered the premier gallery dealing in antique Native American art. For over 20 years, Morning Star Gallery has resided in a landmark adobe hacienda on Canyon Road, where our exceptional collections have been presented without parallel. We have continuously offered museum-quality treasures from over 50 Native North American tribes and we are recognized for our attention to detail and incomparable service. The scope of our collections includes pre-1940 beadwork, quillwork, pottery, weavings, ledger drawings, basketry, carvings, and jewelry, along with classic New Mexican Spanish Colonial furniture and the devotional arts. Authenticity, excellent condition, aesthetic merit, and cultural insight are always stressed. We offer consultations on all aspects of collecting—acquisitions, dispersals, display, and conservation, as well as appraisals.

Our Collections Include:

Beadwork
Examples of clothing, utilitarian items, and accoutrements from the Northern Plains, Central Plains, Southern Plains, Plateau region, and the Great Lakes. Tribal works represented from the Crow, Blackfeet, Nez Perce, Cayuse, Cree, Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, and many more.

Pottery
Examples of pottery from all the Southwestern Pueblos, including the Rio Grande Pueblos of New Mexico and the Hopi Pueblos in Arizona.

Textiles
Examples of weavings from the Navajo and Pueblos of the Southwest, including blankets, mantas, dance sashes, and regional rugs.

Basketry
Examples of basketry from across North America, with a special emphasis on baskets from the Southwest (Apache and Pima/Papago) and California (Pomo, Yokuts, and Yurok to name a few).

Jewelry
Examples of jewelry from the Southwest including Navajo silver bracelets, earrings, concho belts, and squash blossom necklaces, along with Pueblo works including Zuni inlay pins and Santo Domingo heishi necklaces.

Ledger Drawings
Examples of Plains ledger drawings dating to late 19th century. Morning Star Gallery has been a premier location for these rare works on paper; we have published several books on this topic.

Carvings
Examples of carving and sculptural work from the two coasts—Northeast and Northwest, along with everything in between, including carved masks, model totem poles, effigy figures, and feast bowls/ladles.

New Mexican Furniture
Examples of classic and revival Spanish Colonial furniture, including chests, storage bins, tables, benches, and chairs, produced locally in New Mexico by both Hispanic and Pueblo carpinteros.

New Mexican Devotional Arts
Examples of classic Spanish Colonial religious iconic art produced in New Mexico, including painted retablos and carved santos and crucifixes.

Art for the New Collector
Examples of Contemporary Native American art for the beginning collector. Emphasis here on Pueblo pottery, Navajo and Pueblo jewelry, and Plains ledger drawings from well-recognized and ribbon-winning artists, working in both traditional and innovative methods.

This is a beautiful gallery with an extensive variety of equally beautiful Native American art. Their sister gallery,Nedra Matteuci, has a wonderful sculpture garden that is also a must to visit when in Santa Fe. The staff at both galleries are great, very knowledgeable and not stuffy at all. The Morning Star Gallery is my fave, as I could get 'lost' in Native American art and history. Kudos to all of you and the artists! P.S. Your websites are terrific also!
