Helping Santa Fe Students to take the LEAP (Literacy, Empowerment, Advocacy, Principles)

The May Center for Learning

A non-profit half-day and after school program educating students with learning differences

The May Center for Learning is a non-profit, half-day school and tutoring center in Santa Fe, NM for students in grades 2-10 who have learning differences. We provide a short term, accelerated skill acquisition program in reading, writing, and math that enables students to achieve to their intellectual potential.

To achieve this goal, we focus on four skill areas:  Literacy, Empowerment, Advocacy, Principles–LEAP. Our program is designed to help students develop a positive self-concept through successful academic experiences.  We offer a half-day program, after school skill-building and tutoring, and community educational seminars on the issues surrounding learning differences.

Half-Day School Year Program

The half day program for the 2012-13 school year uses multisensory instruction in a highly structured environment to present a curriculum based on individual learning goals. Students are placed in small classes of no greater than four students per teacher and attend three classes daily which focus on reading, written language and mathematics.  In addition, students receive explicit instruction in organization, study and life skills.

Students may choose to attend the five mornings a week program, or students in grades 7-10 may opt for the three day a week program, which provides both a morning and an afternoon option in order to accommodate the student’s regular school’s schedule.  All students attend The May Center for a half day only, returning to their regular school for the rest of the school day.

Close communication with the student’s regular school helps to ensure optimum success for the student in both environments. Progress is reported throughout the school year in the form of progress reports, grades on pre- and post- standardized instruments, and mastery of individualized learning goals. Parent conferences are scheduled at least three times during the school year and may occur more frequently upon request.

We also offer a summer program and after school courses and tutoring.  See our website for details.
