Santa Fe Children’s Museum

The Santa Fe Children’s Museum offers interactive exhibits, hands-on activities and ongoing programming for kids up to 14 years. Focused around “learning through play,” the Museum encourages visitors and their families to explore exhibits and programming in the arts, humanities, science and culture.

This children’s museum is one of the only in the country that has both indoor and outdoor exhibits.

The outdoor space is a 1-acre southwestern horticulture garden called Earthworks which hosts a greenhouse, a music plaza, a giant sand pit, an adobe playhouse and, coming in the summer of 2013, a traditional southwestern adobe cook house called an Horno.  In addition to the exhibits, Earthworks also provides hands-on programming such as from garden to table cooking and adobe brick making.  Each summer a group of Youth Conservation Corps interns build a new exhibit and facilitate new programming.  Earthworks is also a lovely place to enjoy your lunch.

Indoor exhibits include favorite permanent exhibits such as a massive water feature area where kids can make giant bubbles, control a waterfall, and create damns and waterways.  The toddler area is designed especially for the young ones to have a safe, padded place to crawl, climb and explore movement, puzzles, music and early social skills. Kids of all ages enjoy face painting, a giant harmonograph (just like a spyrograph but bigger), a dramatic play area with costumes and puppets, and a magnet table.

Older kids especially enjoy the 16-foot climbing wall where kids over 50 lbs -- outfitted with helmets and harnesses- can learn and practice basic rock climbing skills. In 2013 the museum is adding a workshop space for kids aged 10 -14. This workshop will be outfitted with various tools, electronic equipment and computers so that kids can tinker to learn as well as design and make a variety of projects. Programs will include things like working with a 3D printer, stop motion animation, robotics, and game design.

Special performances and hands-on sessions with artists and scientists are regularly scheduled. Please check website for more details and ongoing classes and programming: santafechildrensmuseum.org.
