Music and Art as a healing force
Bringing free live music and dance performances to those confined to institutions and art workshops for youth at risk (Youth with Promise) and a seven week free summer music festival (Santa Fe Bandstand)
OUTSIDE IN is a non-profit, community-based organization established in 1995 to bring free, live, professional music, dance and other artistic presentations to people who are confined in shelters, residential treatment facilities, correctional facilities, and nursing homes in New Mexico and who do not otherwise have access to the Arts. Our mission is to alleviate suffering, lift the spirits, and ease the loneliness and sense of abandonment that is so common among confined and institutionalized populations, through access to the performing arts by providing a continuous series of live performances and presentations.
We present programs for the frail and elderly confined to convalescent and nursing homes, people with psychiatric and physical disabilities, the developmentally impaired, the homeless, those in drug rehabilitation programs, inmates of correctional institutions.
Ever since the founding of Outside In, growing requests for performances and presentations especially directed toward youth has indicated a tremendous need. The development of our Youth with Promise program marked a new dimension of weekly educational workshops for high-risk youth. The Youth with Promise program provides guitar, dance, and visual arts workshops to juvenile offenders in detention and on probation, to at-risk youth in shelters and residential treatment programs and to other underserved youth in the community. We have been empowering incarcerated youth by enabling them to discover their own creative potential through an immersion into the arts.
Upon release from detention, the young men and women can continue these same workshops every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at our after school program. This is very important to many of our students for continued rehabilitation during this critical period. The youth depend on these ongoing workshops and expect us to be there for them every week. In September 2011, we began a collaboration with the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of Santa Fe. We now offer our Youth with Promise Program guitar, dance, and visual arts workshops onsite at the Club’s Teen Center during its after school program. Through this partnership Outside In’s Youth With Promise will be able to reach a whole new demographic of 13-17 year olds, who are still very much at risk, but have not yet fallen through the social safety net.
Since inception, Outside In has continually accomplished its mission by presenting over 6,000 performance events and workshops for audiences, which include people of every age, ethnicity, and physical, mental and social disability. Time and time again, we hear from staff at all the facilities we serve, about the positive and healing effect that our performances are having on their residents.
