Making a very real difference...every day.
The Mission of Kitchen Angels is to provide nutritious, prepared meals to homebound individuals living with life challenging conditions.
Kitchen Angels is a not for profit home delivered meal program serving the greater Santa Fe area. Our mission is to provide free, freshly prepared and nourishing meals to homebound individuals living with chronic, life threatening or terminal illnesses. Kitchen Angels was founded in 1992.
We currently employ four full-time and one part-time staff. We are housed in the Coll Green Angel Depot, a facility dedicated to ending hunger in Northern New Mexico. We utilize 270 well organized volunteers who prepare and deliver healthy and appetizing meals five days a week. Additionally, our mission includes regular opportunities for our volunteers, staff and board members to interact with those less fortunate. Our volunteers donate 22,791 hours of service annually.
Each weekday delivery includes the nutritional equivalent of at least two meals and contains a soup or salad, an entrée, dessert or fruit and whole grain bread. Once each week we provide whole fresh fruit for snacks, protein supplements by request and frozen entrees for weekend meals. All meals are “heart healthy.”
The majority of our homebound clients live in the city of Santa Fe, but through our Extended Family Project clients living in Santa Fe County (11%) or outside of the county (5%), who have neighbors or health care workers able to pick up meals, may also receive our services.
Seriously ill people struggling at home with cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other life limiting conditions, often enduring the effects of harsh treatment interventions, are often too sick to shop for food or to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. As a result, many suffer from hunger and malnutrition which exacerbates their illness, impedes recovery, and can even lead to death. Many are unaware of the consequences of a chronically poor diet and nutritional habits.
In our nineteen year history we have prepared and delivered 650,739 meals to more than 3,189 persons. Our goal is to alleviate hunger and provide vital nutrition. 89% of our clients say they avoid institutional care due to our program and 79% are able to afford their medicines since their food needs are provided for. 43% report fewer overnight stays in the hospital.
Our clients fall into two general categories: those under the age of 60 in need of meal service who do not qualify for any other food program; and those who qualify for another food program but have severe dietary restrictions and therefore cannot take advantage of other meal services.
You can help by volunteering to prepare or deliver meals. We ask you to commit to one shift, one day a week. It’s that simple.
In a letter, one of our clients wrote: “The wonderful dishes you sent, and the dear Angels who delivered them, made a very real difference in my life every day. While the delicious food nourished my body, the kindly Angels nurtured my spirit. It’s a very rare helping hand that allows those whom it helps to retain their pride and dignity, and the Kitchen Angels do that.”
