Youth Leadership for Community Change
Working towards a healthy, just and sustainable community
Earth Care is a local Santa Fe non profit dedicated to empowering and educating youth to create healthy, just and sustainable communities. We believe that young people have the inherent capacity to solve problems and address the environmental and social challenges we are facing in the world, and that with their participation, sustainability is within our reach. (Sustainability meaning meeting the needs of today’s generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs or inhibiting the ability of living systems to regenerate themselves.)
Earth Care works with diverse young people and educators to promote education for sustainability and support young people in identifying their interests and taking action to meet critical community needs.
We provide in-school and after-school programs that help thousands of youth each year become engaged in their community. Our programs encourage leadership, civic engagement, cross cultural relationship building, and environmental stewardship.
Earth Care is unique in its work to create avenues for youth participation on City advisory boards and task forces, at conferences and events, and among their peers. We strive to make education more relevant and motivating for young people by engaging them in community action, especially around creating a sustainable food system.
Earth Care’s four programs in Santa Fe, New Mexico include: Youth Allies Leadership Program for high school students, Sustainable Schools in K-12 schools, Food Justice Program for young professionals to the benefit of low-income children and families, and the Sustainable Santa Fe Guide.
Our work and staff have been recognized by numerous organizations including Leadership Santa Fe, E-Town, and the NM Young Nonprofit Professionals Network. Others who have endorsed our work include Peter Senge, Paul Hawken, Michael Meade and most importantly, the many local young people who stay involved with Earth Care and sustainability efforts for many years.
Earth Care was co-founded in 2001 by Taylor and Christina Selby, young social entrepreneurs themselves at the time. It is located on Siler Road.
In 2010 our budget was $444,045. Funding is received from foundations, individuals, and the government.
