La Villa Real de Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assis is Santa Fe's official name, which means The True City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi. And Santa Fe is steeped in a deep holy faith that has thrived here for four centuries. Founded by Catholics, Santa Fe has always had a grand church, and today the city is full of historic churches that have provided residents a place to worship.
The city's diverse religious population includes Roman Catholic, Jewish, Presbyterian, Unitarian, Methodist, Christian Scientist, and Greek Orthodox communities. There are several temples, as well as a Buddhist stupa, a Zen meditation center and several monasteries.
