Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike just closed on Broadway, where it won a 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. Now you can experience it at The Lensic, in a new production by Albuquerque's FUSION Theatre Company. In Durang's Chekhov-inspired comedy, Vanya and Sonia's life is thrown into turmoil when their younger sister Masha arrives with her much-younger boyfriend, Spike. The play opens FUSION's second Santa Fe season at The Lensic.
In his hysterically funny and affecting romp, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Christopher Durang takes on Anton Chekov's most time-tested themes proving that whether you're in 19th Century Russia or 21st Century Pennsylvania, the human condition really never changes.
In addition to winning the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike also won the 2013 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, the 2013 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play, and 2013 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play.
As we join Vanya and Sonia in their Bucks County childhood home, they are surprised by Masha, their glamorous movie star sister, who brings home her twenty-something boy toy. Masha’s exploits throw the normally quiet household into utter upheaval as its residents and visitors get swept up in an intoxicating mixture of lust, rivalry, regret, and the sudden possibility of escape.
FUSION Theatre Company's production opens in New Mexico 10 days after the close of the Broadway run and is directed by Gil Lazier (Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage, August: Osage County). The production stars FUSION co-founder Jacqueline Reid, Tony-nominee Joanne Camp, FUSION regular Bruce Holmes, Portland-based actress Elizabeth Huffman, Los Angeles-based actor Ross Kelly, and Andrea N. Agosto.
