This month, in honor of Black History Month, a panel of local filmmakers will share their cultural perspective and filmmaking experiences as African-Americans. February panelist include Gene Grant, Shaun Scott, Sandi K. Shelby, Allan Gaitirira and Diana Gaitirira.
Gene Grant an independent filmmaker and host of New Mexico In Focus. He is also a columnist for the Weekly Alibi and previously wrote columns for the Albuquerque Journal and Tribune. He recently wrapped up seven years of writing the Albuquerque On Film column for Albuquerque, the Magazine. He has also contributed to Variety magazine on the New Mexico film industry. Gene is also an award winning playwright.
Shaun V. Scott is a certified engineer with uPUBLIC where he directs a 30 minute talk show, The Shepherd's Voice. He is also a technical director and instructor on several productions hosted at the uPUBLIC Central Avenue facility. He recently directed the video taping of the TEDxABQED at the African American Performing Arts Center. Shaun is active in the Indie community working multiple positions including producer, unit production manager (UPM), stunt coordinator and performer, actor, and first assistant director.
Sandi K. Shelby
Sandi is a member of the first NM based African-American Theater Company, and is participating in the "Roots Revival" at Popejoy Hall this month. She is an actor, writer, producer, 1st and 2nd AD for the After After Party with Stephen Michael Quezada and videographer for the James Douglas Show. Sandi began her acting career at the age of 4 as a background actor in "The Boxer" starring Earnest Borgnine and Robert Blake.
Allan Gaitirira is a SAG Eligible actor, producer, and filmmaker. This triple threat was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya and is fluent in English, Swahili, and Kikuyu. This rising star is best known and easily recognized from his leading role in "The Heart of No Where" which aired on BBC and his three page spread in Rags 'N' Riches Magazine. He also has done re-enactments for America's Most Wanted. He recently co-produced and co-starred in the SAG short film called "Not On Board," which made it's debut at the 2011 Albuquerque Film Festival. Allan is currently co-producing a new webisode called "Front Row Divas".
Diana Gaitirira is truly a well-rounded Haitian-American woman. From SAG Eligible actress, producer and filmmaker, she is proving that you can have it all. She has recently co-produced and co-starred in the SAG short film, Not On Board , which made it's debut at the 2011 Albuquerque Film Festival. She is co-producing and co-starring in the webisode "Front Row Divas." Look out for her new movie, Terrible Angels, where she plays opposite Michael Madsen, coming soon to Blu-Ray and DVD. Diana is co-founder of Cheza Jouer Films, an Albuquerque based production company.
