During the years that led up to and followed New Mexico’s admission to the Union in 1912, a dazzling array of creative spirits made their way to La Tierra Encantada, attracted by the beauty and healing powers of the landscape and climate, by the vibrancy and spiritual power of Native and Hispanic cultures, and by the stimulation afforded by a fascinating company of pioneering artists, intellectuals, and social leaders.
To explore the flowering that made Taos so appealing to authors like D. H. Lawrence, we’re delighted to welcome LOIS RUDNICK, an eminent historian who has chaired the American Studies department at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and who has given us classics like Mabel Dodge Luhan: New Woman, New Worlds and Utopian Vistas: The Mabel Dodge Luhan House and the American Counterculture.
She’ll be joined by BARBARA HARRELSON, an author and tour leader who has contributed to the Bloomsbury Review and other periodicals and whose Walks in Literary Santa Fe: A Guide to Landmarks, Legends, and Lore has become essential reading for those who wish to retrace the steps of such luminaries as Mary Austin, Witter Bynner, Willa Cather, Tony Hillerman, Paul Horgan, and Oliver La Farge.
Presiding over this gathering will be JOHN F. ANDREWS of the New Mexico Humanities Council, who heads The Shakespeare Guild and hosts programs at two historic clubs in Manhattan’s Gramercy Park.
