The Lensic Performing Arts Center proudly presents TAO, the amazing company of Taiko drummers from Japan, and their newest production, Phoenix Rising. TAO’s spectacular, energizing performances blend traditional Taiko percussion, athletic choreography, and colorful modern costumes, offering audiences a thrilling and fresh interpretation of the ancient art form of Japanese drumming.
The stars of TAO live and train at a compound in the mountains of Japan, reaching the highest skill level only after years of intensive study and training. TAO has had massive international appeal, with hundreds of sold-out shows. Critics have raved about the precision, energy, and stamina of the performers, each of whom brings non-traditional flair to the group by drawing on their diverse background. For instance, one of the performers is a rock musician, another is a gymnast, and another is a composer. Since 2012, global fashion designer Junko Koshino has also collaborated with TAO to unite fashion and entertainment, making performances even more awe-inspiring.
TAO was established in 1993 in the Aichi prefecture of Japan, with the goal of entertaining the world. In 1995, in order to pursue a deeper creative environment, TAO moved to the Kuju area of Taketa city in the Oita prefecture, Kyushu Island—the site of the legendary Aso Kuju National Park (known for its dramatic volcano landscapes). In Kuju, TAO began to create its distinct vision through original theater arts, costumes, and more. A production office was established in Kuju to run shows both inside and outside of Japan, and TAO made its debut on the world stage in a 2004 appearance at the world-renowned art and music Edinburgh Festival Fringe in England.
