The demons confronting Cowboy Poet Wyatt Rugosa won’t go away. His muse, Grace Hundertmark, a woman with whom his annual dance has inspired his poetry for the last 20 years, is widowed and now available. But Wyatt finds that talking to Grace isn’t as easy as dancing with her, and this new opportunity has caused his poetry to dry up, and the demons mock him relentlessly. Grace has devoted herself to the cause of adult literacy, to such an extent that she’s given most of her worldly possessions in support of her foundation, and now risks losing her house. Her sister-in-law Aileen, who lives next door, covets Grace’s house; she also has the hots for Wyatt and pushes herself at him aggressively, while Wyatt attempts clumsily to demonstrate his love for Grace. Amidst these dynamics, Grace has mortgaged her house to support her foundation and a fund-raiser is her only hope to keep her home and to keep her foundation afloat. She’s supported by her assistants Lindsay, a budding young poet in awe of Wyatt, and Diana, a feisty woman with a past who is building her vocabulary scene by scene. Grace’s maid and confidante, Lupe, tries to provide stability to Grace in her time of conflict. When the cash from the fund-raiser goes missing, deep truths emerge – as well as a gun. Who gets the cash? Who gets the house? And does the Cowboy Poet regain his muse?
