Ribe's current work focuses on national fire policy and also the Valles Caldera National Preserve. He is a Board member with Firefighters United for Safety Ethics and Ecology and the Executive Director for Caldera Action, a group working to get the Valles Caldera National Preserve transferred to the National Park Service.He promotes progressive fire management policy in the face of a century of overgrazing, fire suppression and public fear of fire and smoke.
Tom Ribe is a New Mexico native who has been doing environmental education since 1977. He is the author of Inferno by Committee, on the Cerro Grande Fire. He has been working on public lands conservation issues since about 1980 both locally and in Oregon and California. He worked for Bandelier National Monument between 1980 and the present on fire crews, for Yosemite National Park as a prescribed fire crewmember, and for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in education.
