Event Description

The Cantu Spiritus Chamber Choir, under the direction of Karen Marrolli, presents their first full concert, In Love and War, on Sun. November 17 at 3 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel. General admission is $20, and students are admitted free.

Cantu Spiritus was formed last winter through the efforts of Charles Reyna, choir member and manager, and director Karen Marrolli. The choir, whose repertoire features sacred and secular music from the Renaissance period as well as several modern works, made its first appearance with the Santa Fe Men’s Camerata in June of 2013.  In Love and War is their first full concert and features professional actors Jennifer and Michael Graves, who provide dramatic readings as a counterpoint to the music. The first half of the program features Renaissance madrigals on the subject of love, alternating with writings by 13th century Sufi poet Rumi. “What was in that candle’s light,” Rumi asks, “that opened and consumed me so quickly? Come back, my friend.” The question and entreaty not only act as a response to the choir’s singing of Thomas Morley’s “Fire, Fire, my heart,” but also lead us into John Dowland’s setting, “Come Again, sweet love doth now invite.” The music of the second half tackles the subject of war in conjunction with the writings of World War I poet Wilfred Owen. Marrolli’s own setting of “Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace)” was written to be sung in response to Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” which tells the story of two warring soldiers who meet in the afterlife and declare that, in death, they are no longer enemies with the statement, “Let us sleep now.”
