Event Description

Book Launch & Discussion - Author Julie Fisher will be joined by Paul Biderman of the National Issues Forum...

Democratization NGOs are immersed in the task of strengthening the taproots of democracy...The purpose of this book is to focus on the activities of democratization NGOs and to assess their impact on the democratization process.

By stating that democracy can only be imported and not exported, Julie Fisher gets to the heart of democratization processes. In this timely book, the author provides an exhaustive and unprecedented analysis of the role of “democratization NGOs” through an extremely persuasive comparative study of countries on three different continents.

Julie Fisher was a program officer at the Kettering Foundation from 1997 to 2005. Before joining the Kettering Foundation, Fisher was scholar-in-residence at the Program on Non-Profit Organizations at Yale University and a lecturer in the Biology Department for a course on World Population. As a specialist on nongovernmental organizations and micro-enterprise development, she has been a consultant to numerous international agencies, including CIVICUS, Technoserve, CARE, Trickle Up, Lutheran World Relief, and Save the Children.
