The Lensic Performing Arts Center proudly presents the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, the internationally known folk dance company established in 1951 to preserve the culture and centuries-old dance traditions of Hungary. This performance is generously sponsored by First National Bank of Santa Fe.
The ensemble, which has performed in 44 countries, includes a team of 30 dancers and two bands, the Gipsy Orchestra and the Folk Orchestra, which perform the folk music of Hungary on traditional instruments. The songs featured represent the rich repertoire of folk music that inspired great composers such as Liszt, Brahms, Kodály, and Bartók.
Audience members can expect a spirited evening of song and dance featuring brightly embroidered costumes and choreography that dates back hundreds of years and was inspired by dances learned in villages throughout Hungary.
With its colourful costumes, energetic dancers, and riveting performances, the Hungarian State Folk Dance Ensemble has become one of the most highly regarded folkoric dance ensembles in the world. Since it was founded, the ensemble has toured four continents, performing for more than seven million people. Each year, the group also gives about 100 performances in its home theatre, the Corvin tér, in Budapest.
Praise for the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble
“It is marvelous—crackling with dancing that snaps like a whip in a program framed successfully by a sophisticated context.”
—The New York Times
“Forceful, tasteful, unglorified presentation of ethnic expression . . .”
—The Washington Post
