The Lensic Performing Arts Center, with National Geographic All Roads and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, is proud to host the 5th annual Future Voices of New Mexico Awards. The project has grown in scope since its start in 2007, with 449 students and 26 schools participating.
Hundreds of students from around New Mexico will gather at The Lensic for the screening and awards event, which showcases the category winners of photographs and three-minute films by local students.
This year, the project received 132 film submissions and hundreds of photo submissions from schools ranging from Taos to Albuquerque and Santa Fe to Jemez and beyond, including Tesuque Pueblo, Navajo Nation and Española Valley High School. The winners of each category will receive cash prizes at the event.
The 2012 categories in film are: Comedy, Documentary, Language, Mixed Media and Narrative. The photo categories are: Documentary, Fine Art, Landscape, Portrait and Then and Now. The 2011-2012 film and photo theme is: My New Mexico. The theme was chosen as Future Voices of New Mexico was invited to participate in the 2012 New Mexico Centennial commemoration.
First initiated in 2007, Future Voices of New Mexico Film and Photo Project is a statewide effort providing hands-on learning in photography and film to middle and high school students. Photography and film professionals work directly with students on their projects throughout the school year. Photos and three-minute films are submitted by students to Future Voices for a judging process that awards first, second and third monetary prizes. The annual April ceremony at The Lensic showcases the students’ projects on the big screen to an audience of students as well as film and photography professionals.
