The 3rd Annual Santa Fe Festival of African Art and Culture
FIESTA FELA which began in 2011 as a celebration of the life of world music super star Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has quickly blossomed into a full-fledged African arts festival. So in honoring Fela’s Legacy, Santa Fe is in for a treat of the highest cultural diversity from the African continent.
The lineup of artists for this year’s event demonstrates the festival’s maturity in this short lifespan. African artists include Agalu, with master drummer Akeem Ayanniyi and Moria, the West African drum and dance ensemble. The celebration also features Santa Fe veterans Matthew Andrae, Jaka, The Swank Brothers and I JAH. The Pomegranate Dance Company will perform dances from Morocco and North Africa.
There will be a children’s tent with opportunities to learn drumming and drum making, painting, marimba playing, belly dancing and Afro-Beat.
Kamajou Tadfor, artistic director of Afreeka Santa Fe and executive producer for FIESTA FELA 2013 excitedly exclaimed, “We are delighted with arrangements for FIESTA FELA 2013, a real African cultural explosion. Bringing the event to the Railyard provides a setting similar to an authentic free flowing African market place. We also now have plenty of space for the children’s tent, the "Know Africa" tent and other innovations that are still percolating.
The African cultural explosion is the all-day interactive performance and live creations of art by artists of all genres, occurring simultaneously with the activities on stage. This has become a signature of FIESTA FELA.
