CURRENTS:  THE SANTA FE INTERNATIONAL NEW MEDIA FESTIVAL

Dates:  14 June – 30 June, 2013

Admission: Free to all exhibits, screenings, performances workshops, and panel discussions.

Location:  Various (throughout Santa Fe); main exhibition hall – El Museo Cultural 

The Festival offers New Media Arts exhibitions, screenings of experimental documentary video, panel discussions, workshops, multimedia performances and docent tours for youth groups and the general public.

This year, work by artists from the United States, Great Britain, Singapore, Brazil, Finland, Australia, Cyprus, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Ireland, France, China, Czechoslovakia and Greece were selected.  Video and interactive installations; art gaming; social media art; digital dome screenings; multimedia performances as well as exquisite, articulate single channel video – narrative, abstract, personal and social – with compelling content and imagery will be shown at El Museo in the Railyard and venues throughout the city of Santa Fe, NM.

Docent Tour:  Meet the local, national and international installation artists whose work is part of the main CURRENTS New Media exhibition. Guided tour and discussion with  artists and Festival organizers.

Artist talk:  César Meneghetti, I/O Project and the Venice Biennale

The artist will discuss I /O his a multidisciplinary work that investigates the border between normality and mental and physical disabilities.

 

2pm – 4pm

 Workshop 1:   Rapid Development of Visual Performance Tools (Max/MSP Jitter)

    Presented by Darwin Grosse and Andrew Pask from Cycling '74  

Workshop focuses on using Max and Jitter and a set of subroutines called Vizzie to quickly prototype video-based performance systems.  Participants need only bring along a laptop, preferably one with a built in web camera.  No previous Max programming required for success.

Location:  IAIA Digital Dome  (shuttle provided to/from IAIA-el Museo)

Reception and Dome Screenings 

Similar to a planetarium format, the Digital Dome has become the latest frontier for many new media artists, allowing them to create a truly immersive video experience.

Max Workshop 2Exploring the Analog Model (Max/MSP Jitter)

Presented by Darwin Grosse and Andrew Pask from Cycling '74 

This workshop will show people how analog modular synthesizers work through the use of a set of open sourced Max modules called BEAP. It will demonstrate how high-level modular systems (of either type) can be used to make idiosyncratic and complex systems through experimentation and hands on exploration. Participants need only bring along a laptop and a pair of headphones. No previous Max programming experience is required to achieve success.”

            Panel Discussion and Video Presentation: Art and the Legacy of Artificial Life: the synthetic embrace of bio-media, embodied form, hybrid systems and evolutionary networks

Panelists:  Paula Gaetano-Adi (U. North Texas), David Krakauer (Wisconsin Institute for Discovery), Cory Metcalf (U. Denver), David Stout (Hybrid Arts Lab, U. North Texas)

As an art form, A-Life can be seen as a subset of diverse new media practices with a long history extending from the artistic automatons of the Swiss clockmakers through the pioneering systems of 1960’s video art. The panelists will reflect on this history, providing a rich illustration of contemporary forms and discuss the emerging areas of scholarship, exhibition and theory guiding the next wave of interdisciplinary experimentation.

The magic of a D Numbers’ live performances is in the realtime reorganization of analog sounds from live instruments into intricate webs of loops, samples and digital bliss.   D Numbers creates multilayered compositions that explore a wide range of feelings and tonalities that range from melancholy ambience to aggressive rock to ecstatic funk, and that take their listeners on a sonic joyride.
