Reedist Charles Lloyd is a perpetual seeker, his saxophone a vessel for sonic exploration and enlightenment. There’s no missing the lessons he absorbed from the great John Coltrane some five decades ago, but in Lloyd’s sound they’re transformed to his own spiritual ends: tranquil, focused, driven, and full of purpose.
Lloyd emerged in the 1960s and became a crossover star, leading a quartet that introduced Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Cecil McBee to the world. He was also a pioneer of so-called “world music,” seamlessly and gently incorporating musical traditions from around the globe into his work. In the decades since Lloyd has gone in and out of a couple of self-imposed exiles, but since the mid-80s he’s been a steady, inspirational presence in jazz.
In March, he turned 75 and his touring in 2013 is marked by special birthday celebrations, including this visit to Chicago. Lloyd will perform with his long-time rhythm section with bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland—two players who’ve fully absorbed and reflect the liquid mutability, serenity, and concentrated power of the leader’s music. They’ll be joined by special guest Bill Frisell, perhaps the most recognizable jazz guitarist of the last three decades, a musician who shares with Lloyd a meditative calm and lyric beauty to say nothing of a trademark sound
