PECOS NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK CELEBRATES GREER GARSON’S BIRTHDAY
Pecos National Historical Park exists in part because of the generosity of the Academy Award-winning actress and her husband E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson. Please join us on Sunday, September 29th for a day of activities as we celebrate Greer Garson’s 109th birthday.
In 1943, Greer Garson won the best actress Academy Award for a popular film in which she portrayed the spirit, virtue and courage of a British homemaker in wartime. After Col. E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson saw “Mrs. Miniver,” he arranged with a friend, actor Peter Lawford, to meet Miss Garson—and married her in Santa Fe in 1949.
She came to see in New Mexico a “mystical strength.” While living at the ranch, Miss Garson accepted the role of "Auntie Mame" on Broadway and described to an interviewer her take on the character: "Mame promoted a liveliness and kindliness, and isn't that the best one can do?" The Fogelsons had homes in Dallas and Los Angeles as well as the ranch. Mr. Fogelson died in 1987 and Mrs. Fogelson in 1996.
Be sure to reserve a spot on one of the special ranger-led tours (9:30a and 1:30p) of the Forked Lightning Ranch House on September 29. Park entry is $3.00 per person; kids under 16 are free. The park accepts all National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands passes. Please note that van tours such as this one are an additional $2.00 per person. Call the E.E. Fogelson Visitor Center to at 505-757-7241 to make a reservation.
Pecos National Historical Park is located some 25 miles southeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico and is a unit of the National Park Service, under the administration of the U.S. Department of the Interior. For further information, please call the Visitor Center at 505-757-7241.
