Beloved Santa Fe artist Gustave Baumann, well-known for his wood block prints, also carved marionettes to entertain his daughter in the family’s living room at Christmas. Soon friends and neighbors joined this tradition, growing in numbers where it could only be accommodated in St. Francis Auditorium at the New Mexico Museum of Art.
On Sunday, December 16 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. the New Mexico Museum of Art will host the marionettes at their annual performance during the museum’s free Annual Holiday Open House.
Kids, sitting very close to the stage, can get up-close and personal with the magical Juan and Rosina, Miguelito, the burro, and of course, Warts, the rascally duende with a heart of gold.
The marionettes will perform two short plays for children of all ages. A children’s “treasure hunt” will find Freckles, Warts’ twin brother, hiding in the museum galleries. Enjoy a photo opportunity with the Baumann Santa Claus marionette who, in a reversal of tradition, sits on your lap to grant holiday wishes. Families enjoy arts and crafts projects, holiday music fills the air, and refreshments are served.
Free admission. For more information the public may call, 505-476-5068.
The New Mexico Museum of Art is located at 107 West Palace Avenue, on the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe.
