From the New Mexico Centennial website: Baile de Cascarones (Dance of the Eggshells is held annually to promote and preserve the traditional music and dances of Spanish Folklore. Attendees celebrate the custom of using decorated egg shells filled with confetti to re-enact the tradition of breaking the shells above a lady’s head as a way of winning her acceptance to dance with a gentleman.
Live music and many traditional dances will be performed such as the popular Baile de la Escoba, La Raspa, El Vaquero and many more. Throughout the evening decorated eggs shells are sold by members of La Sociedad Folklorica de Santa Fe, who sponsor the event. Many of the decorated shells are so elaborate, they become collector items. This is a family event. Price is $10 per person, $15 per couple, and youth under 18 $2.00.
