New DVDs:

Endless Love (2014) C-104min. D: Shana Feste. Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde, Bruce Greenwood. Parents futilely attempt to keep their privileged daughter away from a boy they don’t like. Remake of the 1981 Franco Zeffirelli movie with Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt (not to mention Tom Cruise, still a supporting actor). From Scott Spencer’s 1979 novel (available at the Santa Fe Public Library). [PG-13]

Gambit (2012) C-89min. D: Michael Hoffman. Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman. A beleaguered art curator joins up with a Texas rodeo queen to sting his snobby boss over a fake Monet. Absolutely terrible, often embarrassing remake of the far better 1966 movie with Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine was written—incredibly!— by the Coen Brothers. Worth watching only because New Mexico subs for Texas (Bingham, Galisteo, Laguna Pueblo, Los Lunas, Rio Rancho). [PG-13]

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013-China) C-110min. D: Stephen Chow. Shu Qi, Wen Zhang. A Buddhist and a demon hunter team up to protect a village from a demonic trio. A comedy, a tragedy, a fantasy, and an adventure, all in one fun movie. From the director of SHAOLIN SOCCER and KUNG FU HUSTLE. [PG-13]

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (2013-Australia) Season 2, 13 individual mysteries, 4 discs.
