Light romantic thriller about an art appraiser who gets obsessed when he meets an heiress with quite a collection. Made in English. From the director of CINEMA PARADISO. Music by Ennio Morricone. DEVIL’S DUE (2013) C-89min. CoD: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett. Found-footage horror about a video-crazy dad-to-be, his anxious wife, and the supernatural evil threatening them all. See title for more. [R]

ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW (2014) B&W-90min. D,Sc: Randy Moore. Roy Abramsohn, Elena Schuber. Surreal parable about a man and his family in a theme park, as he becomes more and more unhinged. Shot in monochrome on the sly in Disneyland and Disney World, a first.  [NR]

GIMME SHELTER (2013) C-101min. D,Sc: Ronald Krauss. Vanessa Hudgens, James Earl Jones, Rosario Dawson, Brendan Fraser. Teen girl hits the road in search of her long-lost dad. Title has unfortunate associations, don’t you think? [PG-13]

GLORIA (2013-Chile) C-109min. D: Sebastián Leilo. Paulina García. Superb character study of a lonely, middle-aged divorcée who has spent the last ten years dancing and browsing in discos. Finally she meets Señor Right. Or maybe not. Very rewarding, surprisingly frank film, well worth your time. Highly recommended. [R]

LABOR DAY (2013) C-111min. D,Sc: Jason Reitman. Kate Winslet, James Brolin. A troubled single mom and her son give sanctuary to a an escaped convict on the run. Based on the 2009 novel by Joyce Maynard (available at the SFe Public Library).  [PG-13]

THE LEGEND OF HERCULES (2014) C-99min. D: Renny Harlin. Kellan Lutz, Scott Adkins. Eye-filling but cloddish imagining of the Grecian demigod’s young adulthood, before his 12 Labors. [PG-13]

THE SELFISH GIANT (2013-GB) C-91min. D.Sc: Clio Barnard. Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas. Downbeat childhood drama is a bleak Ken Loach-like update of the Oscar Wilde fairy tale, about two working-class boys who become criminals. [NR]

SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (2010-Japan) C-138min. Super-spectacular Toho Studios live-action version of the popular manga TV series known in the U.S. as STARBLAZERS.

STAR WARS (1977) Newly available in a special edition translated into Diné under the auspices of Lucasfilm and the Navajo Nation Museum. Shown recently at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe.
