VIDEO LIBRARY NEW RELEASES/Week of April 11th 2013

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (2013) 121min. D: John Wells. Meryl Streep, Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard, Dermot Mulroney. A family of strong-willed women reunites at their Oklahoma dining table, as their pill-addled alcoholic matriarch is succumbing to cancer. Streep and Roberts received Oscar noms. Based on the Pulitzer-winning 1998 play by Tracy Letts (and he knows the turf, as he’s from Tulsa). [R]
GRUDGE MATCH (2014) 113min. D: Peter Segal. Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger. Three decades after their famous last bout, two pro boxers meet up again in the ring, each with a private score to settle. A wasted opportunity to have Jake LaMotta and Rocky Balboa duke it out, but not without its meta moments. [PG-13]

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG (2013) 161min. D: Peter Jackson. Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly. Band of intrepid dwarves journeys through Middle Earth to find and destroy a huge fire-breathing dragon before it scorches their homeland. Second in the trilogy is infinitely better than the draggy first one (AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY), though still episodic and a bit overlong. Nevertheless, a spectacular production and a good sit. [PG-13]

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES (2013) 84min. D: Christopher Landon. Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz. Young man in Oxnard (!) is possessed by demonic forces and goes homicidal. Only tangentially related to the first four films; a fifth in the main storyline opens this coming Halloween. Director Landon is Michael’s son. [R]
