Blood Ties (2013) C-127min. D: Guillaume Cadet. Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, James Caan. In 1974 Brooklyn, two brothers—a cop and an ex-con—clash and reconcile, while individually working out their women problems. In Hollywood’s Golden Age, they would have been played by Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable. Caan excels as their sickly dad. Remake of Rivals (2008-France). [R] 

Enemy (2013-Canada-Spain) C-90min. D: Denis Villeneuve. Jake Gyllenhaal, Melanie Laurent. A man becomes understandably perturbed after seeing his exact double in a movie. Genre-defiant thriller, with Jake in two roles, really should not be described more, so that the surprises remain intact. From the 2004 novel The Double by prolific Portuguese author Jose Saramago (available at the SFe Public Library). [R]

Spook Who Sat By the Door, The (1973) C-102min. D: Ivan Dixon. Lawrence Cook, Janet League, Paula Kelly. An African-American man in the CIA plays the Uncle Tom game so that he can learn how to stage a new American Revolution. Written by the late Sam Greenlee, based on his 1969 novel, which won The Sunday Times’ Book of the Year.  [PG]

300: Rise of an Empire (2014) C-102min. D: Noam Murro. Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey. Greek general Themistokles battles against the advances of Xerxes and his naval commander Artemesia. Continuation of the Sparta vs. Persia saga 300 (2007), with a feisty sex scene unlike any other. [R]

Romantic fantasy adventure about an Irish burglar in a fanciful, snowy Manhattan, who falls in love with his victim. Poetic, magical story spans a century.
