SPREAD – The Sequel
This crowdsourcing event has become a staple of emerging artists’ and organization’s hopes of getting their projects off the ground (think Meow Wolf, for their fabulous “The Due Return,” winners the first year). It’s also a great party.
Inspired by FEAST in Brooklyn and inCUBATE in Chicago, SPREAD is a recurring dinner event designed to generate community-driven financial support to fund artistic innovation. In Santa Fe, SPREAD is a community dinner organized by SITE Santa Fe that funds artists' projects and creative initiatives. SPREAD seeks to provide micro-grants for innovative projects conceived by New Mexico-based artists.
SITE has just announced the seven finalists’ projects that have been selected for possible funding. The all-important dates have also been just released. Just as the dates for Lannan events and the ticket purchase dates are complex, SITE’s dates for SPREAD are equally complex, but, like Lannan’s, they are complex for good reasons. You see, it would be easy to buy up a lot of tickets at once for SPREAD and up the chances of your project winning all the loot. With the ticket policy detailed at the bottom of this blog post and on the SPREAD website, it is easy to see that each of these finalists will get a shot at the finding – often between $7,000 and $8,000. So read carefully, play by the rules and support the artists of your choice.
Here are the finalists:
• Cut+Paste Society – Snow Poems
• Christy Georg and Cedra Wood – North by Southwest
• Friends Of The Orphan Signs – Trade Winds Revival: Stopping and Staying
• Marcia Lyons – Mirage Desert Hum
• Mary Tsiongas – Dendrochronologist's Dilemma
• Molly Sturges/ Littleglobe – Coal
• Lynn C. Miller Performing – Gertrude Stein/"Gertrude Stein Lights the Lights"
How SREAD works
At each SPREAD, diners pay a sliding-scale entrance fee (starting at $15) for which they receive dinner and a ballot. During dinner the seven finalist artists will present short proposals for innovative and yet-to-be-realized new projects. The SPREAD diners then vote for their favorite project.
At the end of dinner, the artist whose proposal receives the most votes is awarded all funds collected at the door to help realize their project! Funded projects are presented by SPREAD grantees at future SPREAD dinners.
How to attend
The next SPREAD dinner will take place on Friday, September 7, at the Santa Fe Farmers Market. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
