Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

Centered between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday reminds us as consumers and as Santa Feans, that we have much of here to appreciate.

Shopping in Santa Fe is an adventure not to be missed. Santa Fe has been a trading center since the very beginning, right? This goes WAY back…….It’s just had that shopping vibe all along! Still today, the tourists show up in droves to shop here. They say we’re a mecca for shopping. I’m pretty sure they’re not talking about our new Wal-Mart super center. It’s our locally owned stores that will lure you into historic buildings and delight you with items unique to Santa Fe. It’s the local business owners and employees that want to visit with you, and help you find that perfect gift. You won’t smell pinon smoke or green chile on your way into Target, but you will when shopping along Palace Ave. Sure, you could give a $50 gift card to Olive Garden or Red Lobster, but wouldn’t it be even better to give one from El Farol, or Tomasita’s?

A shopping stroll around downtown has always been one of my most favorite holiday traditions. Every year I also check out: Jackalope, Tin Nee Ann, the Railyard, Candyman, Sanbusco, DeVargas Mall, Canyon Road, Santa Fe Mountain Sports, local nurseries and greenhouses, Ten Thousand Waves, museum stores, locally owned bookstores, and I pick up a few gift certificates/cards from locally owned restaurants.

Great deals aren’t just at big box stores. Almost all local retailers are offering special pricing this time of year in order to get a share of our holiday gift-buying budgets. I, for one, intend to spend almost all of my gift budget with Santa Fe merchants.

When we all shop small, it will be huge.
