Several hundred spectators and athletes congregated before sunup at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center for the 4th annual Santa Fe Triathlon. Organizer Rachel Wexler seemed especially excited that, aside from the usual athletic suspects, some 250 of Santa Fe's general population had also signed up to run 5 kilometers, bike 12 miles, and finally swim 400 meters.
I find it difficult to fathom being able to swim at all after a run and a bike ride, let alone swim speedily.
City Councilor Carmichael Dominguez sipped Java Joe's coffee before the 6 a.m. start, and admitted he was excited for another year of this "great city event."
It was inspiring to see so many chipper (and athletic) people in one place so early in the a.m. Some particularly dedicated athletes were missing limbs and competed with prosthetic assistance.
These athletes topped the list as of 7:30 a.m.:
Women's #1 - Terry Moore
Women's #2 - Tess Amer
Women's #3 - Sarah Crewe
Men's #1 - Rance Irvin
Men's #2 - Pat Brug
Men's #3 - Matthew Gonzales
