Two great horse operations come together to hold a horse trainer contest in conjunction with the celebration for National Day of the Cowboy - Saturday, July 26th 10am to 5pm

Champion Cowboy and silversmith Clint Mortenson, is hosting a variety of events to celebrate the 10th National Day of the Cowboy at his ranch - Mortenson’s Silver and Saddles. Spectators and event participants all enter for free!
This year will be bigger and better than ever with new events featuring The Horse Shelters’ Trainers Competition, “Gimme Shelter – Trainers’ Rally for Rescues”.  There is more.  Activities during the day will include arena polo, jumping, reining, ranch roping, cowboy mounted shooting, and a kids show.

“Gimme Shelter” is a program designed by The Horse Shelter to develop horses that have never been ridden.  Local trainers drew from a hat to take home a THS horse for the Trainers Challenge.  At 3pm, Saturday July 26th, the eight horses will be judged with adoption bidding immediately following.  The goal is to have all eight horses adopted and placed in good homes where they can become productive.  [If you want to be pre-screened for bidding to win one of these nicely started horses, contact The Horse Shelter – info at the bottom.]

The volunteer trainers are working with their horse for 100 days.  The trainer contestants include Clint Mortenson, Ginger Gaffney, Karen Evans, Loal Tucker, Joost Lammers, Erica Hess, Kristen Cleeg, Michelle DeCanditis, and Rogelio Enriquez.  It will be a spectacular feat of horsemanship to witness what trainers accomplish in just 100 days.  Please see “Horse Around New Mexico” magazine July/August issue for in-depth profiles on these trainers and horses.
Once again this year, concession lunch will be provided by the famous chuck wagon cook Carl Hawkins. There will be a tack swap too, and tack sellers can grab a space for just $10.  So, pencil this date in on your calendar.  Don’t miss this fabulous celebration of the American cowboy.  Who knows, you might take home a beautifully started horse.
