For the Love of Lavender

Time for the annual Los Ranchos de Albuquerque's Lavender in the Festival, a celebration of all things lavender that includes cooking demos, live music, a Beer and Wine Garden, kid's activities, growing tips, Lavender Fun Run and a Lavender Baking Contest presented by edible Santa Fe.

The 9th annual Lavender Festival takes place July 12-14 in the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque and this year, a few new events have been added, including a Youth Art Show with lavender and other sustainable agriculture themes; presentations about honey bees by the Los Ranchos Beekeepers; and visits with the mules and donkeys of the Rio Grande Mule & Donkey Association.

The Lavender Baking Contest takes place Saturday, July 14. Judges will select the winners based on the appearance, texture, taste and use of local ingredients in their baked goods. First and second place winners will receive $50 gift certificates to Savoy and their recipes will be printed in an upcoming issue of Edible Santa Fe.

Contestants must use at least one ingredient that is grown or produced in New Mexico and you get even more points for using ingredients you've grown or raised yourself. If you want to participate, hurry because the registration deadline is today, July 10. You must be an amateur baker 18 years or older in order to compete. To register and for more info, click here.

Bobcat Bite's Resurrection

It's no longer located in the iconic adobe with the neon sign, but the legendary Bobcat Bite lives on in its new incarnation at Garrett's Desert Inn downtown on the Old Santa Fe Trail, where it will be called Santa Fe Bite.

Since opening in 1953,  Bobcat Bite has been the place for green chile cheeseburgers,though it also offers steaks, ribs, pork and more. Its green chile cheeseburger was ranked #12 on GQ Magazine's list of “The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die,” been extolled by food writers in The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and other publications, and has made it to the top lists of restaurant critics, food writers and other epicureans everywhere.

But John and Bonnie Eckre, who owned it for the last 12 years, announced earlier this year they would be closing due to differences with their landlord.

The Eckres will open their new restaurant in Garrett's next month, according to information on Garrett's Desert Inn's website, and we'll still be able to order the famous green chile cheeseburger, along with other items we've come to know and crave from the Bobcat Bite menu. So Long to the Pink

If you haven't yet heard, the venerable Pink Adobe has been sold to the owners of the Guadalupe Cafe, after a historic run of nearly 70 years. The new owners have changed the name of both The Pink and the Dragon Room Bar to the Guadalupe Cafe. Meanwhile, the Guadalupe Cafe, situated on the corner spot a few doors down from The old Pink is now Jalapeños.

In other restaurant news, Terracotta Wine Bistro, the new restaurant launched by Peas' N' Pod catering owners Glenda Griswold and Catherine O'Brien, may be open next week in the space vacated by Vivre on Johnson Street. The Mediterranean-inspired menu will feature seasonal, local foods as much as possible and be offered for both lunch and dinner. The bistro will offer $6 wines by the glass until 6 p.m. Can't wait to try this spot! Should be a wonderful addition to Santa Fe's dining scene.
