OK, normally I hate year-end lists, but this year, I've broken down and done one of my own. In no particular order, these artists gave us music this year, that one way or another impressed me:

Avett Brothers
Lumineers
Wallflowers (great reunion CD)
Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band (oh yes!)
Kevin Bowe (great retro-rock!)
Ryan Bingham (local boy makes good)
Aimee Mann
Mumford & Sons (still liking it)
Gary Clark, Jr.
Neil Young (both releases are amzaing in their own right!)
Teagan & Sara
Rolling Stones (Doom & Gloom proves them still relevant)
Buddy Miller/Jim Lauderdale (great + great = incredible)
Etta James
Bruce Springsteen (Esquire called him "the last protest singer")
Jack White (everything he does is true to the rock and roll spirit)
Smash Palace (my Philly homeboys)
Florence + The Machine (Say my name....please!!!  She also rocked with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter" live in London)
Alabama Shakes (can't wait until the next one!)
Alejandro Escovedo (always raising the bar)

That's it for me.  I'm sure I missed some good stuff, but this is my story and I'm sticking to it.
