As an artist, Kirstin Mitchell is perpetually torn between portraying what she sees and trying to depict what she feels. The unique shapes that she sees in rocks and trees allow her to paint works that, although clearly realistic, have abstract forms within them. Mitchell ‘s paintings juxtapose delicately detailed smooth areas with more loosely painted sections where brush marks are clearly visible. She enjoys the strong contrasts of light and dark and is drawn to the negative areas within an image. Although nature is Mitchell’s inspiration, the real motive behind her art is to create order out of chaos, to develop a greater understanding of the world around her by simplifying and clarifying her vision.
