What Lies Beneath the Snow
by Claudette Sutton • Tumbleweeds

Somewhere in the ground, under the foot of snow that still covers our yard, are hundreds of bulbs that Charles and I planted this fall. That at weekend in October, before the trees had lost all their leaves, before we put away the barbecue tongs and rolled up the garden hose, planting daff odils, tulips and grape hyacinths didn’t require a leap of faith. It was just one of those things we do sometimes in the fall, like freezing chile and picking raspberries at the Salman Ranch. Bulbs are kind of a gardener’s savings plan: you put them in the ground, wait several months, and collect the payoff in the spring with compound interest.

On October 28, 2009, I spoke by telephone with Edward Borins who with his wife Eva are owners of Santa Fe’s Garcia Street Books (GSB), the most popular independent bookstore for six years since 2003 (according to Santa Fe Reporter readers). Edward began our discussion by focusing on two upcoming benefits this fall. On Tuesday, November 17, 2009, GSB will host Margaret Atwood and life-partner Graeme Gibson in a benefit for WildEarth Guardians and Wild Watershed at the Lensic Theater at 7 P.M.
Location, Location, Location
Figuring out what matters helps couples find the perfect spot for their big day
by Gregory J. Pleshaw • The Santa Fe New Mexican

Location, location, location. Even a jaded local like myself has to admit that this town has as many venues in which to hold a wedding as there are places to view the sunset. When it comes to locations, in fact, Santa Fe has no lack of spectacular settings. As Greene tells it, however, choosing the location comes down to the personality of the couple and what they really want in a setting. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Almost peaceful, really.
