by Kate McGrawJournal Santa Fe

Feb 27, 2009

Internationally known painter, teacher and performance artist Roger Shimomura will open a new show of his latest works depicting memories of the internment camps holding Japanese and Japanese-American families and individuals on Friday, March 6, at Eight Modern gallery.

On Thursday, March 5, Shimomura will give an artist’s lecture called “An American Diary” at the Institute of American Indian art. The talk will include a slide show of paintings, prints and experimental theater pieces that span the artist’s 40-year career. “His work has a lot in common with some contemporary Native artists because of shared experiences with racism and ignorance toward the two groups ––...

Geoffrey Gorman, known for his animal sculptures, goes in new directions in solo show

by Kate McGrawJournal Santa Fe

Feb 13, 2009

Geoffrey Gorman is known for his imaginative and endearing animal sculptures and certainly there are plenty in his solo exhibition opening today at Jane Sauer Gallery on Canyon Road. But there are some additions to the show that demonstrate that the veteran artist has more than an arrow in his quiver.

“Jane Sauer is terrific. She pretty much lets you do what you want, even if she is not crazy about it herself,” Gorman told the Journal . “As for me, I’ve kind of gone wild.”

Gorman’s new show includes plenty of the eponymous “Animals,” his trademark sculptures of an excited cat, a curious baboon, a high-stepping deer or long-eared rabbits. “His creatures are...

Johnsons of Madrid 2nd annual group show opens this weekend

by Kate McGrawJournal Santa Fe

Feb 6, 2009

When Diana and Mel Johnson look at their rambling set of gallery spaces in Madrid, they see beauty, yes — but they also see a whole lot of hard work.

“It has taken years to transform our building from the coal truck repair garage, the Chrysler Plymouth repair garage and the car showroom to the large six rooms of our gallery,” Diana Johnson told the Journal recently. Each month, the couple changes exhibitions in some of their galleries and from 3 to 5 p.m. on the first Saturday they host a monthly reception honoring the participating artists. This weekend, the show extends to all six galleries, and honors many of the 100-plus artists Johnsons of Madrid represents.

“It...

by Kate McGrawJournal Santa Fe

Jan 30, 2009

If you are an artistic photographer, to what extent does your home — the place where you live and work — color the intent and result of the portraits you shoot? A group of artists from Mexico, Peru, Panama and Cuba whose photographs explore their subjects’ connections to their cultural and geographical context are featured in “Portrait and Place,” a show opening today at Eight Modern on Delgado Street.

Robert Fantozzi, Flor Garduño, Graciela Iturbide, Rachelle Mozman and René Peña are included in the exhibition, gallery director Jaquelin Loyd said. “Some of the connections these photographers have to the cultures in which they work are expected and some are unexpec...

‘Slow Food Fast’ Dream Nearly a Reality

by Kate McGrawJournal Santa Fe

Jan 27, 2009

Real Food Nation, the dream of chef Andrew MacLauchlan and his designer wife Blyth Timken, is approaching an eagerly anticipated opening in the last week of March.

It will be the culmination of a three-year dream for the couple.

“We were 14 months into the permitting process when we finally broke ground in July 2008. We’re 21 months along now from the time we applied for the first permit — and we had planned for a year before that,” MacLauchlan said. “I’m not complaining. These things just take time.”

Real Food Nation is taking shape in an almost completely remodeled old gas station (“from the cement blocks out and in”) and renovated for- mer r...
