A signature Santa Fe summer event
Bring your picnic baskets and dancing attire for the season closer of St. John’s College Music on the Hill Concert Series, featuring Nacha Mendez Quartet, 6-8 p.m., July 20. The ensemble performs a kinesthetic blend of Latin and Spanish music that explores a range of styles and rhythms.
When St. John’s College launched the Music on the Hill jazz series six years ago, concert organizers hoped each concert would attract three or four hundred people. Six years later, organizers predict that close to two thousand local residents will come and enjoy soothing summer evenings of jazz. Musicians from around the state and across the country vie to play the concert series, christened a signature Santa Fe summer event, too.
Concertgoers are encouraged to picnic on the field while enjoying a range of live performances, including jazz, blues, classical, and contemporary folk.Viewed as a family-friendly event, parents watch their children race around the athletic field, picnic baskets spread out on blankets while others enjoy a glass of wine as the sun slowly sinks into the horizon. Sandwiches and other beverages are also available for purchase from Walter Burke Catering and Sunflower Markets for those who forget to pack a picnic.
In an effort to ease traffic congestion, the College is once again partnering with Santa Fe Trails to provide a shuttle service from Museum Hill to the entrance to the athletic field on Camino Cruz Blanca. Shuttles will run every twenty minutes between five and nine p.m., so sit back and enjoy the ride! A map of parking options is available on our website at http://www.stjohnscollege.edu/events/SF/music.shtml.
Remember, the concerts are free of charge and open to the public, but pets have to stay home. If inclement weather strikes requiring cancelation of a concert, call the St. John’s College switchboard at 984-6000 to receive updated information. See you “on the hill!”
Premier Sponsor, Los Alamos National Bank returns for the fifth year along with Verve Gallery, Flow Science, Hotel Santa Fe, and Barraclough and Associates. Indeed, the popularity of the concert series swelled amongst sponsors as well. Staff and volunteers made a concerted effort to reach out to the investment, retirement and medical communities in Santa Fe welcoming a host of new sponsors to the Music on the Hill family including Santa Fe Trust, El Castillo Lifecare Community and Ponce de Leon, Peck Dentistry, High Country Macula, Eye Associates, and the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
