History unfolds on the battlefield this weekend as El Rancho de las Golondrinas hosts its annual Civil War New Mexico, this year marking the 150th anniversary of civil war battles in New Mexico.
Accoutered in uniforms and equipment from the Civil War era, living history actors will recreate the battles of Glorieta and Apache Canyon. Both battles were fought near Santa Fe in 1862, according to Golondrinas press materials.
The weekend showcases military drills, skirmishes and cannon fire, as well as recreations of Union and Confederate camps. The Territorial Brass Band is scheduled to perform music and historians will provide talks on Civil War-era medicine and surgery.
Civil War New Mexico takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6 at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, just south of Santa Fe on 334 Los Pinos Rd. Civil War battle reenactments are staged each day at 2 p.m.
Admission is $8 for adults; $5 for seniors and teens; children under 13 are free.
