How many daily maneuvers do we expect our bodies to perform for us? How many blinks in an eye, how many bends in a knee? Our human bodies are complex machines worthy of tender care and that care is often referred to as “body work”. From massage with its many sub-categories and specialties to the Asian traditions of Jin Shin Do and Shiatsu, these are treatments that go beyond mechanics. Finding the optimum modality and practitioner is highly personal but if you’re ready to try it, chances are it’s available in Santa Fe.

WHAT IT IS:

Hot Stone Massage

With this technique, smooth, heated stones are massaged into muscles and then tied in place for deep relaxation. Considered one of the most effective, but gentle, techniques for relaxation and sore muscles, this is a popular treatment, widely available. If you’ve been there and done that, consider a variation with cold stones.

Jin Shin Do

Translating as “the way of the compassionate spirit, this technique is based on ancient Japanese acupressure points and is designed to balance energy flow. It is recommended as a release for chronic pain and stress. Practiced with the client fully clothed.

Rolfing

Rolfing aims to balancing the body in specific relation to gravity. It relies on soft tissue manipulation to realign the body and is recommended for posture issues and low back pain in addition to general body alignment.

Shiatsu

Japanese for “finger pressure” this is a gentle, subtle technique, often described as needle-free acupuncture. It incorporates acupressure, stretching and Swedish massage.

Swedish Massage

Familiar to most of us as “basic” or “general” massage, this is a broad term for a number of muscle relaxation techniques. Muscles are manipulated by applying pressure and rubbing in the same direction as blood flow to promote circulation.

Thai Massage

In addition to manipulating pressure points and stretching, the Thai method incorporates gentle relaxation and lengthening of the muscles. Practiced with the client fully clothed.
